Web Safety PH was invited to attend the 2nd International Conference on Cyber Crime organized by Department of Justice and Microsoft Philippines, held at Mandarin Hotel on Feb 4, 2o11.

The present PH Gov’t., recognized as the most tech savvy, just sent a message that it will not take Cybercrimes sitting down. DOJ Sec De Lima also shared some of her Departments’ initiatives in the area of technology:
- DOJ Central Office is now “Wi-Fi” enabled
- Setting up of a national Cybercrime office
- Setting Up Electronic Case Monitoring System
- Setting Up of Digitized Notary System
- Setting up of various DOJ Social Media Accounts.
- Though the cybercrime bill is not considered one of the “priority bills”, they are supporting those filed in both houses.

- Angel Averia Jr., President of PH Cert .
and those from the Gov’t. are:
- Sen. Ed Angara [Author of Cybercrime bill in the senate and Chair of Science and Technology Committee
- Rep. Sigfrido Tinga [Authors of one of the Cybercrime bills in the house and Chair of ICT Committee]

- Sec. Ivan John Uy of CICT
- ASec. Geronimo Sy of DOJ
Microsoft provided an updated data on internet threats and it’s various initiatives as responsible player in the corporate community [will blog about this separately]. PH Cert, on the other hand, shared their emergency response program.
The resource persons on the Gov’t side explained the salient points of the bill, noteworthy is the description of cybercrime per category and not per act, and the need to pass this on time.
On the same conference, Web Safety PH also gave the following recommendations, based on our observation and feedbacks we received during our Watcha Webtrap! Web Safety Roadshow Seminars [sked here].
- Involvement of Dep Ed in incorporating Online GMRC and Online Safety practices for Primary and Secondary Education
- Involvement of Dep Ed in formulating a framework on Anti Cyberbullying program
- Involvement of Local Government in regulating Internet Cafe operations. Aside from restriction of use during school hours, Internet Cafe’s should:
- Partnership with schools
- Allowing kids to play “only age appropriate” online games
- Display of Posters detailing the online risks
- Display of Posters detailing safety online practices
